Yellow Door Bistro (Big Taste YYC 2013)

Okay I know, I know I haven't posted in three months but better late than never?? I've just been catching up on life and finishing my first year of university!!

Anyways, so the last of my Big Taste Calgary segment, I went to the Yellow Door Bistro right beside Hotel Arts. The Alice in Wonderland inspired restaurant definitely has an impressive decor (with a yellow door)!

Heirloom Carrot and Fairwind Farm's Goat Cheese Salad - golden raisin, orange cardamom dressing, toasted almond foam

For main it was either the choice of Poached Dover Sole or Grilled Hangar Steak. I'm hands down red meat therefore went with the steak. If i remembered correctly the server said the hanger steak was served medium rare (she told me that the hanger steaks are more on the chewy and hard side) but I thought that would be too bloody for me therefore got my steak done medium well like always. After eating the steak I understood why it's served medium rare. I was still able to chew my steak but next time, I'll probably stick with medium? Anyways the steak was fresh and hot when it got to our table. I spread the butter on the steak, dipped it in the gravy or reduction, took some arugula and oh my gosh was the combination of all those things ever so amazing?????? I don't know if it's the cafe de paris butter, gravy or the seasoning on the steak, whatever it is, I want more!!!!! Then you take some of the crispy pomme frites, delicious. The only thing was that it was a tad too salty but that's because I'm used to light salt cooking.

First course was the salad and can I say this made me change my mind about carrots? I personally don't like carrots but these carrots were cooked just right. It is also the day I've ate beets for the first time in my life and liked it (kind of reminds me of potatoes). Nonetheless, the combination of the goat cheese, raisins, the slight tang of the orange cardamom dressing and the crispy frisée, came together! I thought it was an amazing salad!! Never expected myself to like this (because I'm a pretty picky eater).

Grilled Hanger Steak - rosemary parmesan pomme frites, cafe de paris butter

Macaroons & Gold Dusted Chocolate Balls

The desserts were a little disappointing as on the website it said there would be French Macaroons but instead got non French macaroons? I could be wrong or that they probably ran out considering that I went on the last day of Big Taste. But the little black box with the golden bow is a nice way to end the meal.

Overall I would definitely come back to Yellow Door Bistro to have the steak again (it's on their regular menu and not expensive!!) and to try out other items from the regular menu.
